Mohammed Al-Abbas Elevates the Speed Bump… and His Nation’s Name
A high school sophomore from Al-Ahsa’s education department has won at the 2025 Geneva International Exhibition of Inventions. Sharing his experience, Mohammed Yasser Al-Abbas says:
"A thought had long preoccupied me—one that carried the responsibility of saving lives and reducing potential risks. It stemmed from something found on every street: the speed bump. These bumps often delay emergency vehicles and can even damage them and other cars.
I asked myself: how can we solve this problem? I kept turning the idea over in my mind, trying to envision it as a real-world solution. I didn’t stop at thinking—I began to take action. I sketched the idea, adjusted its dimensions, and then visited Fab Lab Al-Ahsa—a digital fabrication laboratory that turns ideas into tangible prototypes and is one of the initiatives of the Abdul Monem Al-Rashed Humanitarian Foundation. There, I found support and guidance from specialists who helped me refine and mature my idea into an innovative project.
The idea was a smart speed bump that can be controlled via a linear actuator. The bump rises to its normal shape when needed and lowers to keep the road clear for emergency vehicles. In this way, and with God’s permission, we can help save lives.
In just a few months, the idea matured, and the dream became a reality. The time came for me to represent my country at the 2025 Geneva International Exhibition.
By God’s grace and success, I received four certificates—from the China Association of Inventions, the National Research Council of Thailand, the French Federation of Inventors, and an appreciation certificate from the Swiss-Egyptian Friendship Association—along with four other awards from Korea.
This experience taught me that small ideas can make a big difference in our lives, and that an idea means nothing unless it becomes reality—once we believe in it.
It’s a simple, spontaneous idea—but one with great impact. My advice to everyone: believe in your idea, don’t underestimate it. It might just be the reason someone’s life is saved.
I thank the Abdul Monem Al-Rashed Humanitarian Foundation for their tremendous support of project creators. My message to everyone: don’t give up. Chase your dream—your reach depends on how far you strive."
